This definition of an institution has been carried over from the A.L.A. Cataloging Rules for Author and Title Entries (Chicago, ALA, 1949, p. 148), which defined institutions as "entities whose functions require a plant with buildings, apparatus, etc., as distinguished from bodies, organized groups of persons such as societies, associations, etc. whose duties may be performed equally well in one place or another."
